Falcons' 2022 season gets off to a good start

Chichester Falcons Baseball & Softball Club got their 2022 season off to a roaring start, with a tournament win and two notable player development events which are sure to set some strong foundations for years to come

In late April, the senior slowpitch team headed to the Solent League Firstball tournament in Portsmouth, where they battled it out with other league teams in a one-day round robin. Having dispatched Southsea Sharks, Solent Oddballs and Portsmouth Pirates, the Falcons found themselves in the grand final to take on Solent Sluggers. The game went right down to the wire, with Chichester winning by one single run to bring the trophy home after a long day at the field.

Meanwhile in Slough, four players from Chichester were competing at the Great Britain Fastpitch Softball League. Olly Howley and Raul Dodson-Richi were playing for Eagles and Hawks - the unofficial format of the GB mens teams who compete in the men's division, while Amy Morris and Bronte Harvey both pitched well for the Free Agents in the women's division. Whilst all four players hit well, most notable was that three players from Chichester are now starting pitchers in this prestigious national league.

The following weekend saw a team of (mostly) junior Falcons head to Slough to compete against senior teams in the BSUK Slowpitch Cup tournament. Helped out by a sprinkling of Falcons coaches, the juniors bravely fought their way through games against Maidenhead, Jersey, Coventry and Bracknell, finally getting their reward in the form of a resounding 30-17 win over local rivals Baffins Brewers from Portsmouth, who they had tied a round-robin game with just hours earlier. Heads were turned as the Chichester youngsters were capably making plays against experienced adult players, with Nathan Wyborn later winning the TSSC Player of the Week award for his efforts across the weekend.

The Falcons continue their 2022 season with the first home game of the year against Portsmouth Dodgers at Oaklands Park on Sunday 15th May.
